Work

Before I had kids, I promised myself that I would teach them how to work.

Helping around the house would not be an option, and it would be something everyone was expected to help with.

Now I am a mom.

And sometimes it’s much easier to just do the job myself rather than teach and help a child do the same job.

And usually I can do it much better than they can.

But what would they learn if I did it?  or if I fixed everything they did?

This is a drawer of towels that Andrew folded.

He did a great job for a four year old.  I was very proud of him.

When I open this drawer and see the uneven fold lines and chaotic piles,

I remember what’s important.

Teach them to work.

Thank you for the reminder and inspiration!

I think the towels look GREAT! In fact, we gave up folding the towels at our house. The drawer is really big and deep and we just throw the clean ones in there. It wouldn't work with your little drawer, but it sure saves me a lot of time.
Keep up the good work on the "kids doing the work" thing. I wasn't good enough at it. And I lived to pay the price. ;-)

Great post. I believe that 100%...although my kids probably need a better teacher since that is usually what my towel drawer looks like when I do it too... :)

You're awesome and very right! It can DEFINITELY be easier to do it yourself sometimes. I think we all need to remember to let the kids do more so they end up knowing how to and maybe even enjoying work one day.
